View Full Version : I demand a recount!

For levity, what lyrics best describe the battle for Florida's 25 electoral votes?

My nominee:

"I've been on the town
Washing the bullshit down"

or did I mishear that lyric as

"I've been sorta down,
Washington -- bullshit town!"

We will take your responses until 5:00 p.m. EST on a date of my chosing, at which time the polls will close, we will recount twice, then look for loose chads.

The pow'r that is stored in this no-man's land of chance
is there Someone who knows what they're doin'?

From dusk until dawn they have searched all day long
but there's too many clues in this room.

It's a mighty hard way to come down
And a mighty fine way to be found
So hand me my grip from an old sailing ship
Put the kiss of the dawn on my lips
With some luck tonight I might have her at my fingertips

Or as I've heard it said before. Don't tell me about the storms at sea, just get the ship to shore.

I think "I Do It Again" pretty much reflects Florida's recount fever.

Coming to you directly from the recount state

The legend lives on from Palm Beach on down
Of the ballot they claim was so easy
George Bush it is said
Never gives up his dead
When Al Gore's concession comes early.

Great suggestions. How about "Never Say Trust Me" or "It's Too Late, He Wins"?

Hey Frank and Char, how about a British and Canadian view?

Depending on your view of the whole thing:

"So take the best of all that's left
You know this cannot last"

"It's too late, he wins...."

"I'm a real bad loser, that's a what I am
Gonna grab my hat and my hexagram"

"Unlock the gate, unlock the gate
Lower the drawbridge the hour is late
Whom shall it be, whom shall it be...."

"Forget about reason, forget about rhyme...."

"Still I don't kneel down
I was born to fight
So you'd best leave me alone
Maybe I'll get much more than I need
Or much less than I should own"

Another one, taken from Wherefore And Why (http://www.corfid.com/gl/Albums/lightfoot_collection/Wherefore_And_Why.htm)

Maybe that's what Bush thought precipitately:

When I woke this mornin', something inside of me told me this would be my day

P.S.:
I hope the word "precipitately" is still in use, I took it out of a dictionary http://www.corfid.com/ubb/cool.gif

Florian - there's nothing wrong with your use of "precipitately." Your vocabulary is better than most of ours.

Another suggestion for the two political parties:

Nous vivons ensemble
Nous nous connaissons maintenant
Voici comment nous pouvons decouvrir une autre humanite

(I'm missing at least one accented vowel, but my keyboard is limited)

For those election officials counting pregnant chads, dimpled chads and hanging chads, as well as the "butterfly ballot," how about "IYCRMM"

Describing Al Gore, "I can't hold on, I can't let go, I can't say yes and I can't say no."

For everyone, "What's the story, Morning Glory, shall it ever end? I've been all the way to Biscayne Bay and all the way back again."

"Is there anyone home in this HOUSE made of stone? Anyone inside KnoW my name? I've been around for a half a hundred days, never saw a door shut so tight."

=============================================

I just received the following email on the subject:

NOTICE OF REVOCATION OF INDEPENDENCE

To the citizens of the United States of America,

In the light of your failure to elect a President of the USA and thus to govern yourselves, we hereby give notice of the revocation of your independence, effective today.

Her Sovereign Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will resume monarchial duties over all states, commonwealths and other territories.

Your new prime minister The rt. hon. Tony Blair,(Prime Minister for the 98% of you who have until now been unaware that there is a world outside your borders) will appoint a minister for America without the need for further elections. Congress and the Senate will be disbanded.

A questionnaire will be circulated next year to determine whether any of you noticed.

Supaiblue, (hope I spelled that right)

ROTFLMAO!!!! Now, that was NOT nice, but it was VERY funny. I think Char's answer just about says it all. Too Late For Prayin'. But there's yet another line in light of the Supreme Court's newest ruling. "Still we share tomorrow. Could get better than today."

And if idiots will rule, then, "Forgive Me, Lord." (And don't EVEN mention Clinton here! LOL)

Okay, I'll stick my neck out at the risk of getting it chopped off. I'm for Gore. And I hope for the sake of this country he wins. I was a dyed in the wool Republican until we had four years with Bush, Sr. THAT's what made me change parties to Democrat. (and I won't reveal my age by saying how MANY years I was a dyed in the wool Republican. Suffice it to say that when my Great-Grandparents (from Finland) got off the ship in San Francisco the day after the 1906 earthquake happened, my entire family has been Republican. That should give you a clue as to how Bush has disenchanted me with the Republican party. If Bush, Jr. wins, we can ONLY HOPE he doesn't throw up on the Japanese Prime Minister's shoe. Oh, yeah, this country has a lot of class. And]
LOL!

But you guys have to admit, REGARDLESS of his personal life, Clinton has done more for this country than any president has for many, many years.

And, now, with all this, I'm just starting to feel, well, if we lived through four years of Carter, we can probably deal with the idiot who has to use underhanded means to get into office. Just think for a minute(those of you from other countries) Bush's brother is the governor of Florida. George W. Bush is the governor of Texas. Bush Sr. was the President. That's just TOO much power for one family to have. Gasoline prices are sky high. Isn't it just a bit too funny that Bush, Sr. is an oil baron? He's blaming Clinton for it. When his son gets in, gas prices with drop dramatically. Because Bush, Jr. did it. And just one other thing. The projections on election night said that Gore won Florida. Then after Bush in Florida called Bush in Texas, two hours later, it was announced that, well, excuse me, the projections were wrong. Bush won Florida. Geez, the projections were not wrong in the 49 OTHER states. Now the only fly in the ointment is Florida. Does this tell us anything? Hmmmmmmm?

Sorry, Florian for making a political statement on your discussion board. LOL They always say, never discuss politics or religion.

Everyone can beat me up. I will bow my head in shame. Please accept my apology. I still love all you guys! And NOTHING I said was meant to offend anyone. So if you're offended, go for it. I will understand. There will be no hurt feelings or flaming of anyone here. Just had to say it.

Stay loose, eh?

I won't bash you LAMS, but I do disagree. I'm in the military, and will be screwed if Gore gets elected. I also can't understand why people would want a man that strait up lied, and got caught to be president. My personal feeling is that Gore is a shining example of what we don't want representing us. His actions in Florida are more proof. He will just keep bitching till he gets his way, just like the spoiled brat son of a senator he is. As far as other states go New Mexico did the same thing. They declared Gore the winner, and later retracted it. The only ones at fault for those premature anouncements are the news media. You say Clinton did alot for this country, I don't see it. You also say you were republican, but one man changed you're mind. If you look back at all the presidents of the past I'm sure both parties have had men much worse than Bush sr. in office. Well now I'm late for work gotta go.

OK that's one for Gore and one for Bush. Anyone named Chad want to comment? Let's keep it light.

By the way, I heard that Clinton took a fancy to a "dimpled chad," turned it into a "swinging chad" and that's how we got the "pregnant chad."

As for other lyrical quotes applicable to this election, how about "Shut up and deal, I'm losin'" (Yarmouth Castle)

It will definitely be a disaster for us if Gore steals this election.

The lyric that comes to mind is "...looks to us like anarchy" From "Black Day In July" or in this case November.

Paul J.B.,
I don't take your comment as bashing at all. Everyone has an opinion and I guess that's what politics is all about. I suppose that's why we have two parties and our parents have always warned us, never get into a discussion about religion or politics. I respect how you feel. I think we all tend to get a little heated when it comes to such subjects.

Anyway, not that it matters a whole lot, but I respect your opinion. I kind of disagree, but that doesn't make me right. We're all entitled to feel the way we feel and we all have reasons for feeling that way. I hope for the sake of all of us that this thing turns out to the benefit of this country. I think that's the best we can all hope for.

Paul JB & Scott Mac,
I have to agree with you, if Gore ends up stealing this Election....I'm moving to Canada!! lol

Seriously, This Election has gotten WAY out of hand & I hope & pray the US Supreme Court does the right thing to end this farce. The correct ruling for the sake of democracy is to uphold the Law...to say the Florida State Supreme Court was wrong. To go back to the original 7 days for recounts & 10 days for Military/Overseas ballots. Whatever the votes were as of midnight 11-17-00 should be certified by Florida Secretary of State. Three strikes and your out Algore!!!

I've enjoyed all your lyrical responses.

I really was not searching for any truly political talk for one side or the other, only some levity directed at both sides, and at ourselves, by restricting the dialog to GL lyrics. Whether or not I agreed with the political subtext, each lyric quoted gave me a chance to hear Gord's song again in a new and sometimes ironic light.

So let's keep it lyrical -- so that no one feels gored or too bushed to continue the thread.

If they seem a bit untidy
Well unraveling them is fun
I will not stand corrected
I have not harmed anyone
I just let it ride
Ride let it ride
Leave on the evenin' tide

And the winner is ....

"See the judge upon the bench, who tries the case as best he can."

5-4 Judicial knockout.

We can reflect on the nobility of Gore's concession speech:
"I've played your game, obeyed your rules, the best that I know how, gotta get out ...."

Or we can focus on the graciousness of President-elect Bush acknowledging that he will need to earn our respect.

In either event, it's time to close ranks, no matter what our differences. Time to support the President-Elect.

That's what you get for voting me
That's what you get for voting me
Everything you had is gone
As you can see
That's what you get for voting me

I'm not the kind to stick around
Keeping promises I'm not bound
Cause lying is my stock and trade
I'm lying on
I won't think of em when I'm gone

So don't you yell and scream at me
Cause I ain't the prez you thought I'd be
I've done a hundred more like you
So don't be blue
I'll take a thousand before I'm through
Now they're you go you whined again
Now they're you go you whined again
But then some day when your country is on the mend
My bro will pass this way again

That's what you got for voting me
