View Full Version : A new Ebay topic.I am feeling too lazy to search for one of my old ones!!!

Having been away for a few weeks
I had missed checking ebay and have now done so and here is a report on 304 of the auctions that I missed;plus amongst current offerings I found in particular an interesting single
http://i17.ebayimg.com/07/i/000/a0/3f/454e_1.JPG
Note the Warner Bros Seven Arts record label
quite possibly therefore the first appearance by ord on WB???
the flipside is allegedly Go My Way
I found it doubly interesting because although Flanagan's cover of one of my major GL favourites Spin Spin is included in Waynes comprehensive listing at:-http://www.lightfoot.ca/covsong.htm
Go My Way another firm favourite isn't
Also interesting because Spin Spin was a hit back in 1966 and Go My way was not released on an album until 1971's Summer Side Of Life (I clearly recall hearing it live at a concert in a Jim Nasium at Montreal's McGill University in 1969)
My contention is that surely a cover version of Spin Spin would have been recorded and issued nearer to 1966 than 1971 hence Flanagan might well have released Go My Way before Gord's version came out???
However the picture of the single does not indicate the release year
and I have no idea who Flanagan is was or were
and google searches were absolutely no help
"absolutely" is my current "in" word
because I noted that Australians use it at every possible opportunity
Anyway I am sufficiently intrigued to have bid on it so keep off!!
If I win I will report back on how I find this cover
I also noted that an Idaho profiteer has sold at least two copies of a rare CD version of the Two Tones album at the "Buy It Now" price of only $12.00
Presumably this is a rather unauthorised rip from the vinyl that he/she is now mass producing!!
It is the extended "Plus" version which includes the single Lessons in Love/Sweet Polly.
http://www.johnfowles.org.uk/images/Quality_Lessons_in_Love_single.jpg
Which reminds me that I have recently seen a rare B and W clip of the Two Tones singing "MaryAnn: (not on the LP) albeit they are introduced as the Two Timers!!
http://www.johnfowles.org.uk/images/Two_Tones_MaryAnn.jpg

I also noted an ended auction for copy of the Canadian Talent Library LP
in which our Jenney and another avid GL Ebay bidder (Dave Palmer) were both outbid
http://i8.ebayimg.com/05/i/000/9e/4d/2d4d_1.JPG
Appropriately considering where we have just been there was a genuine Aussie pressing of "Summertime Dream" being sold from Melbourne of all places
http://i23.ebayimg.com/02/i/000/99/af/61f4_1.JPG

If I win it's all mine
go and find your own!!
further to my report above I have just spotted yet another rarity that has been added to the current listing of completed auctions since I started my initial posting. It is an LP that I personally had never seen before allegedly called "This Is Lightfoot"
http://www.johnfowles.org.uk/images/This_is_Lightfoot_front.jpg
it is yet another United Artists regurgitation this time by UA Germany of selected tracks from the 5 UA albums
But this time as evidenced by "In a windopane" (sic) including some from Sunday Concert
http://www.johnfowles.org.uk/images/This_is_Lightfoot_side_3.jpg

I consider that side three should have been retitled "This is the quintessential Lightfoot:"!!
As you can see this is actually a 2 LP set comprising the entire Lightfoot! and Sunday Concert albums, wheras most of the plethora of UA compilation LPs were a selection from the first four albums only
http://www.johnfowles.org.uk/images/This_is_Lightfoot_tracks.jpg
tht auction ended earlier today without a single bid!!!

John, I own this double album and it is in fact called as statet. It´s brown with an allover guitar print and that beautiful picture of GL holding/sniffing a flower in the middle of the cover. It was the first album that I bought in the early 70s. And this is sure not the only rason for treasuring it. Vera

'not on your nellie' is a slang way of simply No.

I actually said Nellie and Walter as two separate items (Walter being the name of our revered friend here borderstone)
and not on your Nellie is a bit of UK slang
I have now googled and found
http://www.peevish.co.uk/slang/n.htm
where I read "nellie"
Noun. 1. An effeminate or homosexual male. Derog.
2. A feeble, soft person. Derog.
* Also spelt nelly.
(dicsclaimer in no way did I mean to infer that Mr Stone Border was any of those derog though he may be!!!)
nor was I inferring anything about the expression immediately above Nellie which is
needle dick
That page confirms the general rule that if you do not know what a word means such as "ninny" it is probably yet another word for an idiot
Although quite a few on that particular listing are euphonisms for effeminate personages example nancy
and that page also told me:-
not on your Nellie!
Exclam. No way! Not on your life! A shortening of the rhyming slang not on your nellie duff, where nellie duff rhymes on puff which refers to life, hence not on your life. [1940s]
rathr a convoluted association methinks but then those Cockney folk are wonderfully inventive people!!!

I do know that I hope I never get arthritis in my right hand index finger as since my stroke in 2000 a dropped left shoulder has reduced my previous left handed capabilities so I have to do everything with my right hand Including typing with that hand's index finger. However relief is now literally at hand, or mouth rather in the form of the simply brilliant IBM ViaVoice Voice Recognition programme that I am at this very moment using to dictate this reply

a scan of my earlier version's box
which I can thoroughly recommend having just bought version 10 at the very advantageous price of only $29.99 from:-
http://www.pricecastle.com/ibmviavoice.html
rather less than the £99.99 (say $200) that my company forked out for a much earlier version in 1999
and the $29.99 offer although it arrived in a plain clear plastic bag did include the free headset . Unbelievable value. If anybody would like more details do send me a Private Message

To help/inspire you I googled for
"what was the indian name for lake erie"
and found
"Dear Twig: Where does the "Erie" part of Lake Erie come from?

A long time ago, around 1600 or so, an Indian nation lived, farmed and hunted on the south shore of Lake Erie. Except it wasn't called Lake Erie then.

The nation was called Erielhonan -- "long tail," or "People of the Panther," a reference to the cougars (aka pumas, panthers, mountain lions) of the region. Sometimes the people wore cougar pelts."
not quite as sonorous as Gitche whatsit I admit!!

NELLIE A DUFF, C.B.BENSON and KATE WINSLOW, all schooners owned by the Duff family all were lost on Oct 14, but in different years.

Note the Lake it sank on
To help/inspire you I googled for
"what was the indian name for lake erie"
and found
"Dear Twig: Where does the "Erie" part of Lake Erie come from?

A long time ago, around 1600 or so, an Indian nation lived, farmed and hunted on the south shore of Lake Erie. Except it wasn't called Lake Erie then.

The nation was called Erielhonan -- "long tail," or "People of the Panther," a reference to the cougars (aka pumas, panthers, mountain lions) of the region. Sometimes the people wore cougar pelts."
not quite as sonorous as Gitche whatsit I admit!!

I always wondered about mine. I have So-o-o many of the LP's and nothing to play them on. We just got a turn table from someone, which was supposed to work, but if it does, I sure don't know how. Just about wore out the "Summer Side of Life" LP. I know that one was original. It has
"Nous Vivons Ensemble" on it. (Being as how I am French I thought it was SO "cool" that Gord was singing French.) I always wondered, "Does he speak it, too?" I suppose, eh??

I am wondering if anybody here is sufficiently avid and wealthy enough to buy this watercolour painting
http://i12.ebayimg.com/03/i/000/a1/18/17b3_3.JPG
it is being auctioned on ebay right now offered for a "Buy It Now price of a mere $3000 or best offer. The auction's end date is June 3 so get thinking!!
the Californian seller says
"Painted by Northern California Artist Kean Butterfield.
Began painting 1999 – completed 2004.
Inspired by back cover of Gord's Gold LP (pictured)
(circa 1975)"
and he claims
"I purchased this painting from Mr. Butterfield in 2004 and I paid a premium price to the Artist for this outstanding piece...
(more than I am asking here)
I am a long-time Lightfoot fan and am parting with this painting due to financial needs.
Anybody???
Valerie??!!!??

Louisemmpls...I don't think that our copies of "Back Here on Earth" are bootlegs. I think it was reoffered with the tan cover and different title. It looks to me like one of those endless compilations of Gordons muisic that I can't stand...the tan copy not the colored copy that L and I own.

Valerie??!!!?? John, thanks loads for the heads up, but (a) I am not wealthy enough to buy a $3000 GL painting and (b) although I was foolish a few times, I never paid anything near this for any Lightfoot memorabilia. I did bid high 3 digits once, but thankfully somebody else bid higher!

I'm afraid you will have to break into your piggy bank. Mine is already empty.

There is quite a nice colour picture 9"x7" print on offer on ebay
http://www.johnfowles.org.uk/lightfoot/ebay_picture.jpg
obviously spoiled by the ebay watermark
however a bit of adroit cropping produced a useful square image sutable for CD insert artwork for a CD of the appropriate
vintage

LOL Denny as a former left hander I failed to spot that the original had been reversed

next item:-
A current ebay auction has revealed to me for the first time that Gord's cover of Dylan's Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues was issued as a single and reached number 8 (at least on Toronto radio
station CHUM's hit parade listing in November 1965)
http://i4.ebayimg.com/02/i/000/ac/6b/935f_1.JPG
I recently obtained a slightly different live recording of this from Gord's 1965 appearance on the Johnny Carson Tonight show. and it is quite splendid and slightly different to the issued one on the single record

OK Negatiations
For anybody who does not know this is the title of another Les Pouliot penned ditty that Gord recorded very early on as a single (one of the collection that surfaced in 1971 on the AME (I can't refind it but I once saw that AME stood for American something beginning with an "M" Entertainment_anybody else know??) compilation album "Early Lightfoot" that Gord and Richard Harison took axes to one day in an unsuccesful attempt to eradicate that unauthorised and unwanted issue
There may be some here who have yet to hear this recording to whom I recommend a visit to a new ebay auction at:-
http://cgi.ebay.com/Gordon-Lightfoot-45-rare-early-rockabilly-teen-HEAR-IT_W0QQitemZ180154276934QQihZ008QQcategoryZ306QQss PageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
where you may play a clip of the recording on a new feature I have not seen on Ebay b4
a built in media player " Auction Player"

I just realised that my previous posting here concerned a rare live version of a Bob Dylan's
song and I just refound the very strange lyrics
Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues, © 1965 by Bob Dylan

When you're lost in the rain in Juarez and it's Easter time too
And your gravity fails and negativity don't pull you through
Don't put on any airs when you're down on Rue Morgue Avenue
They got some hungry women there and they really make a mess outa you

Sweet Melinda, the peasants call her the goddess of doom
She speaks good English and she invites you up into her room
And you're so kind, too careful not to go to her too soon
Then she steals your voice and leaves you howling at the moon

Up on housing project hill it's either fortune or fame
You must pick one or the other though neither of them is what they claim
If you're lookin' to get silly you'd better go back to from where you came
Because the cops don't need you and man they expect the same

I started out on burgundy then I soon hit the harder stuff
Everybody said they'd stand behind me when the game got rough
But the joke was on me, there was nobody there to even call my bluff
I'm going back to New York City I do believe I've had enough

Thanks to the kindness of a corfid poster my wife received a most wellcome birthday present last year a set of 4 GL coasters
I will admit that I initially thought when I saw the first auction that this was a terrible waste of perfectly good vinly albums but the creator continues to offer them and I have to say that Susan has had enormous pleasure from her set which gets proudly shown to all visitors who visit her Lightfoot den.
I just spotted the current auction for a 4 coaster set which differs because instead of being made from 4 random discs is actually claimed to be the four sides of the original 2-LP Gord's
Gold issue which presumably infers that each disc centre has been split into two, not an easy task I imagine
the thumbnail below links to a somewhat larger image as currently on the auction page. Don't all rush at once to bid for it though
For reference no bids yet and the Starting bid is US $16.99
Auction End time: Oct-02-07 16:00:00 PDT

OK whilst that is a valid observation things are actually even better
whilst you are signed in click the User CP link at the top left of any forum page
scroll down to
Thread Display Options
the first block headed is "Visible Post Elements"
and includes these wise words
You have the option to show or hide various elements of messages, which may be of use to users on slow internet connections, or who want to remove extraneous clutter from posts.
No sniggering please my posts may get long but nothing in them is extraneous!
therefore dialup suffering surfers can elect to uncheck the option to
"Show Images (including attached images and images in [IMG] code)"
the very next block is headed "Thread Display Mode"
Here you can choose the display mode for threads. For a full explanation of the modes, please view this help page.
which informs you;
"When viewing a thread, you will be able to view the thread from a choice of four modes.

Linear Mode (Oldest First) - In this mode, posts are displayed chronologically from oldest to newest. Posts are shown
in a flat mode so that many posts can be viewed simultaneously.
Linear Mode (Newest First) - This is the same as the above mode, except that posts are ordered in an opposite way
(newest first).
Threaded Mode - In this mode, a tree is shown along with every post. This tree allows you to see the relationship each post
has to others, in terms of who responded to whom. Only one post is shown at a time.
Hybrid Mode - This mode is a mixture of the linear and threaded modes. The post tree is displayed like in the threaded mode,
but multiple posts are displayed simultaneously like in the linear modes."
In fact as set up now there is a drop down list that only includes two of these four options
Tada Tada
Linear - Oldest First
Linear - Newest First
I set mine to newest first which abviates any scrolling to see the latest postings
Wonderful thanks again Florian dear boy

Further to the above. One thing it took me quite a while to fathom out is that when you are viewing "Newest first" a multi page thread despite the pop ups that you get if you mouseover the page numbers example:_
http://johnfowles.org.uk/LIGHTFOOT/images/error_in_page_and_posting_numbering.jpg
the pages themselves are also in reverse order so in the above case the first posting is actually on page 2 not 1 and page 1 is the page containing results "26 through 41"
Florian can this be corrected by you or is the program at fault??
Moreover even the numbers that are shown are in fact incorrect because on that thread page 2 actually only contains poostings 1 to 16 and page 1 has 17-41
As Sean Connery would say "Shurly Shome Mishtake"!!
Any of you Illinoisians who do not have the very nice 1973 Chicago PBS audio only CD (no video exists AFAIK)
might care to look at a newish auction on ebay for a CD with quite smart artwork
http://i7.ebayimg.com/01/i/000/b1/1f/2f66_1.JPG
the alleged "import" CD front
the current auction does not include the CD jewel case back inlay artwork but I have saved it from a previous auction. albeit it was only a small image so the following enlargement is necessarily blurry
(no your eyes are OK trust me!!

an opportunist bootlegger is offering an Audio CD on ebay claiming obviously falsely that it
"Comes shrink wrapped with full color factory inserts.
"Whisper My Name" - The Soundstage Special - PBS - 1979"
http://i11.ebayimg.com/02/i/000/ab/d8/3669_1.JPG
As far as I know that concert recording is/was basically and usually a full video and whilst the picture quality is rather poor and indicates that it was made from a multi-generational copy the sound is fairly respectable so possibly this is quite a nice concert CD as well as yet
another piece of home made CD artwork, albeit with a disgusting choice of fonts for the names of the album and artist
