Just curious, did many of you communicate with each other before the internet??? In Toronto, it was probably much easier than for fans in other parts of the world. Right?
Can remember once a year getting a schedule
of Gord's concerts from his office. Other than that it was very hard to find other fans. Used to get "Goldmine" magazine which was for record collectors (is it still in existance?) and from there started writing to a few fans. In the "old days". http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif http://www.corfid.com/ubb/wink.gif

Hi Aime! http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif You know,I'd imagine before any Gordon sites came up,only fans that attended concerts and maybe close friends & family that shared the same intrest talked about him.

Other than that, the only place I heard Gordon talked about were oldies & light rock stations. Oldies, just playing 4 out of 6 of his "hits" and "light" stations playing 5 out of 6 + "Beautiful",which didn't make the top 40.

I don't think it would be possible for anyone on here to have talked before 1999 though. I think it's also safe to say without internet knowledge,"Harmony" would have sold even less than it did.

"Waiting For You" and "Painter" could have both benefited from us "Lightheads" spreading the word! http://www.corfid.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Been me,and good question Aime_41! http://www.corfid.com/ubb/wink.gif

"Goldmine" - I loved that magazine. It came out every two weeks and it seemed like it took two weeks to read everything listed. (The type was so small.)

I subscribed to it for decades. But, it seems like the internet provided more access to Lightfoot material and I therefore dropped my subscription a few years ago.

Yes, "Goldmine" still exists. I get offers to return every few months.

Hi! And thanks for your feedback! http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif Yes, I know we didn't know many other fans back then. I did write to a couple of people as a result of "Goldmine" magazine, however, and wonder where they are today.

Suzi,

So happy to hear that the magazine still exists. Am going to have to pick up a copy of that. (Except now I'll have to use a
magnifiying glass to read it!!!! http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif http://www.corfid.com/ubb/wink.gif) You are quite right about the size of the print!!
I have just been reminiscing, and found we had bought four tickets to see Gord in 1981, when the tickets were $8.50 a piece including tax. http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif The four tickets means that we brought our kids to the concert.Wow! Seems like another lifetime. http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif

I never knew any other fans - some relatives enjoyed his music but never attended any concerts. All thought I was slightly daft - even back in the 70's. Perhaps I was as I thought Lightfoot did his yearly Massey shows and went home. Then he came back again the following year...
lol
It never even dawned on me that he was touring around the world...even tho I have numerous old newspaper articles about him....
He was MY treasure and that's all I cared about. Lightfoot and Massey....who cared about anything else? http://www.corfid.com/ubb/wink.gif

I read you. http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif http://www.corfid.com/ubb/wink.gif Also, that's why I used to wonder if our children (when they were very young) thought he was the only one who performed concerts. Gord's were the only concerts that we brought them to.

Also, was thinking that even though we are all fans, just think of all the diverse feelings and memories each of his songs and concerts evokes in each of us. How wonderful and awesome and mind boggling, all at the same time.

My brother had some of his albums and that is where I first heard him. I never knew of any other fans. When I was 13, I tryed to get my best friend to love him as much as I did but she loved Neil Diamond more, ha.

He was more of a personal treasure to me. I was able to really sink into a very peaceful place when I had his music on. It didn't matter that he wasn't always on the radio. I would have liked to have known other fans back then though.

I never talked to anyone else about Lightfoot when I was a child, when I did open my mouth about it I was scorned, shamed and ridiculed for even admitting I listened to his music as a 9 yr old!

Actually I never knew he did concerts til 1988 and that is when I first saw him at Massey, he just put out GG2 and he played just about every song off that CD including the opening track "If it Should Please You"

Fast forward almost 30 years, now when I have Lightfoot playing in the cab... people compliment me on my good taste http://www.corfid.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Sentimental,

Your phrase of a "personal treasure" is a very beautiful thought. (And so true) It's like he can take can REALLY take one to that special, peaceful spot, quite unparalled by
any other singer/composer. (at least this has held true for me, also.)

Gord,

Yes! You do have EXCELLENT taste! http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif http://www.corfid.com/ubb/wink.gif
I could guess that our kids never talked about Gord either, to anyone else. They were about 8 or 9 when we started bringing them to concerts. It did seem to foster a great interest in music in them, however. Our daughter is a Lightfoot fan, and our son still admires him. (Or he endulges me by seeming to. http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif http://www.corfid.com/ubb/wink.gif)
But, he has gone off in the entirely opposite direction and has just won best "metal guitarist" for three weeks in a row on the Guitar (now Musician's)War site.
(Oh, well, guess you one can't win them all.) http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif http://www.corfid.com/ubb/wink.gif http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif

wow, i guess i'm not surprised but i can't be the only one who was surrounded by GL music and GL discussions growing up...to the point that it was taken for granted, didn't see him much or own much of his stuff, didn't really have to, must have been the same with Elton saturation in UK or Beach Boys in the US, no?

anyhow, i'll bet Kenyon and others (i realize many GL fans are not internet folks, or atleast not discussion board folks) who i believe grew up in the city, were smothered in Lightfoot (what a way to go, lol!)...the relatives, my folks and older bro (could constantly hear Gord coming 'through the cracks of his grammophone', lol) were either playing Gord, Anne Murray, the Guess Who or Don Messer music http://www.corfid.com/ubb/wink.gif

the springtime always meant March break, Easter and GL at Massey...the internet, for one, made me aware that he did US tour dates, helped lots with messin' away at his chord progressions and exposed me to some great fan anecdotes, passion and wit...cheers http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif

Living in the UK - England - Lightfoot became a rarity after the 70s. I used to listen/talk Gord with my girlfriend until she moved to the US. After that, I really believed I was the only Lightfoot fan left in the world - until I purchased a computer and the internet entered my life. One of the first things I did was 'search' 'Gordon Lightfoot' and there you all were. Some of my best friends are now Lightheads.

http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gifRanking up there in our "blessings", besides Gord, would have to be the internet.
If we all had our own thoughts and memories of him, his songs, and what they have brought to our lives, we still could not share them, as we do, without the internet. (And I say this even though I am severely "computer

i don't think Don Messer could sing either, lol...so he fiddled around istead http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif

i remember Charlie and Marg being the main singers, Catherine MacKinnon and other guests all having a good time, that's what TV seemed to be all about, music! unless my folks never let us watch the 'other' stuff like Perry Mason, lol
http://www.donmessersviolin.com/messer.html

btw, my one sis grew up in the heart of the city...she told me she went to her daughter's school one day and 'that Gordon Lightfoot guy' was there playing his guitar and singing for the kids (one of his kids went there also)...talk about taking things for granted, eh?!...she said 'not a big deal really, it's not like he moves around and entertains and all that'...she's lucky i still talk to her, lol

btw, i have another sis in Orillia, they all seem pretty proud up there http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif ...she says it's slowly turning into the big city up there (there's TWO Blockbuster's in town now, lol)

Before the internet I used to chisel granite tablets with messages and drop them in the ocean and wait for a reply. Sadly I never heard from anyone except The Watchman who at the time was working as an extra on the TV series Sea Hunt. Eventually I could walk out to the boat on the accumulated tablets, which was cool, but very lonely.
This is better.

Orillia ia a lovely town - very pretty, quiet - great summer spot on the lake and in winter it's beatiful. The whole area is a gorgeous part of Ontario and it's not far from Georgian Bay and Christian Island. There are some fabulous beaches along the shores of Georgian Bay.

I pretty much figured I was the only GL fan in NY state prior to the internet. The concerts in NY city would sell out but all year long I could not find another lightfoot fan around town. On some level though, it was much more exciting without knowing about every song before the album came out. The anticipation was part of the excitement. Now the songs get critiqued even before they are officially out. I can remember that the album Ä Painter Passing through - was panned well before it came out and by people who are "fans". It pissed me off because I loved the CD when I got it. In any event there is a lot of good that comes out of the internet including this forum and the now almost defunct newsgroup. That said, the clamore to be the "ones" who are closest to Gord's heart has ruined some friendships and that is sad. In the end, the music is great but individially we likely don't mean jack shit to gordon Lightfoot or anyone in his inner circle. Not that we should. We are just fans

Bill,

First, just have to say that you sound so much like Gord, that if I hear your music and don't remember who I am listening to, at times have thought that it was Gord....so has my husband. (Oh, and our "heavy metal"
son. http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif http://www.corfid.com/ubb/wink.gif, also.)

In respect to the fact that we indivdually
don't impact Gord's life a whole lot, is like you say, as it should be. We have lives and he has his. It's so difficult for celebrities in this age of mass media to have private lives. (And the word "fan"
derives from the word "fanatic". That doesn't sound too flattering when you really think about it.

Also, there are many thoughts, memories, experiences, and life lessons that I have learned from Gord, but some are so personal and precious that they are mine. I don't even share some of those. They are just a part of the fabric of my life, as I have listened to him for 34 years now, as has my husband. They are interwoven into our marriage of 39 years. It is a beautiful thing.

I only hope that Gord knows that he has, and IS a monumental gift to humanity, for THAT he certainly is.

Perhaps, some of this sounds contradictory, but there is a line between deeply appreciating someone, and trying to put oneself in that person's good graces, only for one's own pleasure, or sense of self-esteem.

Most of all I keep going back to a song that no one ususally mentions..."Stone Cold Sober", because there are a couple of lines in it that have come to be a theme for our marriage.
"I hope that we can see each other often,
That our points of view would blend into each
others,
Like the sea and the horizon.
And the sun will shine upon us,
As we live our lives together."

Aime, I think you are the jewel. You have such a way of expressing you thoughts about GL. You say so eloquently the same feelings I have about the man. I just always thought other people liked him, but selfishly thought I was one of the few that could simply get lost in his music. I really feel like he formed a lot of my sensitivities and emotions. That's giving him a lot of credit but what I mean is that I learned from him that your actions do have an emotional effect on others.

And now I find that not only do others share my same admiration for him but some of them even know him and have been to some of the places he sings about. Geesh, I can't handle that, I'm overwhelmed! And green with envy. http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif

Sentimental,

Yes, and it seems like Gord has this uncanny sixth sense, that he could, from the very early days, capture all aspects of human emotion. It ran the gaumet from deep sadness and despair, to elation, and everything in between. He says SO magnificently, what we all feel, but most of us cannot express quite so eloquently. He is our voice and our hearts respond as one. It is SO wonderful to know that, in spite of all this, he is such a kind and humble man. He is one of us, but he is "special", and always will be.

HI Border!! Actually I was into Marvel comics. Spiderman and Ironman and those guys!

Hey Bill,
I think "the B" was talkin' to me and my granite tablets, LOL. (Marvel was great back in the day - wish I still had some of those #1s). Peace.

Wonderfully said Aime!

That said, the clamore to be the "ones" who are closest to Gord's heart has ruined some friendships and that is sad. In the end, the music is great but individially we likely don't mean jack shit to Gordon Lightfoot or anyone in his inner circle on a personal basis. Not that we should. We are just fans. It would serve most folks here better to remember that and stay friends.

Nicely said, Bill, and I agree whole-heartedly with your philosophy.

As for CDs being critiqued before they even come out...The Harmony reviews taught me that I'll listen to others opinions, but I won't hold much stock in them until I listen for myself. As an example, after reading all the comments about Harmony, I had an expectation that ended up being way off base. After reading that it wasn't as "produced" as earlier albums (someone even said it was "underproduced" - in a good way, not a negative one), I expected songs stripped down to basics - something closer to an "unplugged" feel - and I pretty much found it to be just as "produced" as his previous albums (those that I've heard, anyway and granted, I've not heard them all). Don't get me wrong, that's not a bad thing and it doesn't make it a bad CD, I was just expecting something very different and was a little disappointed from that perspective (I've gotten over it, though).

Songs and albums strike folks differently and in a broad spectrum of personalities, tastes vary even in the isolated realm of Lightfoot material. I seem to recall a common favorite song for most folks that doesn't make it your favorites list or mine. (I won't mention the title, just in case my memory isn't serving me correctly http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif)

Bottom line is you have to appreciate other opinions, but judge for yourself.

Bill,we obviuosly mean something to Gordon or else he would not have thanked "the net people" at one of his recent concerts.

Gordon has also been around long enough to know that we (not just us here on the site but others as well) as fans mean very much to him. Without fans or as I used to say "avid listners",of his music, what would his songwriting and music mean to anyone but himself and those that truly are closest to him and in his inner circle?

What if he had not become famous in Canada? He'd be a blue collar worker wondering,"what if" this had happened or "maybe if I'd done this differently".

Believe me Bill,we mean something to him,not on a close knit personal level but in a univeral sense that, all his fans are friends because they like him for his words, his music and just who he is. ...and in Canada,I know it means even more than that. http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif

Those are my feelings about it and I usually don't say things like this but on this one occaision I will....I know in my heart I am right. http://www.corfid.com/ubb/wink.gif Later! http://www.corfid.com/ubb/cool.gif
