In SONGBOOK, Lightfoot explains - "It's about the failure of a marriage. No matter how much it stung, you had to keep on writing tunes. It's about peace through acceptance. It's one song he's played in every concert. It's stood the test of time and I never get tired doing it."

I think Auburn Annie's response should suffice.
Perhaps you would like to share what the argumentative viewpoints were.

RMD Just out of curiosity, RMD, how old are you? Thanks for asking...yesterday, I looked 83, but felt 73. The day before I felt 33, but looked 23.

well, it's kind of hard to explain. I thought that the realtionship had yet to end - it was in it's last stages where new feelings were being exposed and the song was about how the other person would take it - i don't love you anymore is a hard thing to say.
my boyfriend thinks it's about an old relationship - everything is out in the open and it's over between them.

Single release of which song? If you're complaining about IYCRMM, you've picked the wrong forum, boy-o.

Boy, that's a tough call. In SONGBOOK, Lighfoot uses the past tense to explain it, which sides with your boyfriend. What isn't clear is if the song was written during the demise of the relationship, or afterwards. My first impression of the song agrees with yours. I think this is what makes it a classic : it seats a lot of bodies.
