GOOD LUCK!! THIS ONE MAY BE A TOUGHY? it might help if it were a genuine Lightfoot lyric; If it were then a google search would have found it, (since every one of Gord's songs is listed somewhere)
and not produced this negative result:-
"Your search - "cathedral bells ring out across the square" - did not match any documents. "

Let's try a different tack. Lots of Gord's lyrics repeat a line in different stanzas, but a word, or phrase, is different on the repeat.

This one should be easy, but it illustrates the idea.

"Gather not your gold on Earth..."

What's the line, the first time and what is it the second time? What song?

I'm not sure I can remember all the times his lyrics do this. Might be fun.

Jesse Joe

Song: Apology,

Gather not your gold on earth,
it will not pass inspection.
it will not pass inspection.

Same lines both times.

Am I right or do you mean further in the song?

{1}But I chose to live instead, inside the shell they gave me.

{2}Still I think when Im alone away from all night splendor.

Sorry about that, but it is the Wayne Francis site that has it wrong. There's a lot of mistakes there that I found, since playing these games.

Jessie -Joe,
Friend - just a kind word about Wayne Francis. His tireless efforts in GL FAQ'S are legendary,as is his chat-room start-up. Great guy and even better musician. If 1 percent of his FAQ'a are off, he is still in the ethereal
3-sigma accuracy level, rarely attainable in anything. Hats off to him,and you probably did not know of him and explits in honour of Gord for years. He's one of the good guys ! :) - steve

Oh yes, I know Wayne Francis is a good person. It's just that a few times I did go to his site for answers to our little game we play here, from time to time when we can get along. And there were some minor mistakes, and I had to explain myself. But it's nothing that I can't handle. Your friend,,,JJ.

In fact I still have a lengthy continuous paper(dot-matrix printer) printout that I made back in 1997 from the series of FAQs that were then available in profusion (because Wayne constantly honead and updated them!!) on the Newsgroup
for example see an update from 1996:-
Parts 1 through VII at:-
http://groups.google.com/group/alt.music.lightfoot/browse_frm/thread/d0f60458031e5abe/173b5fd7cdf3c62c?q=faq&rnum=41#173b5fd7cdf3c62c
which begins:-
FAQ Part I
----------
Early Biography
Discography
- Albums
- EPs
- Singles
- Remixed Singles
- Internet Tribute CD

FAQ Part II
-----------
The Lightfoot Band
- Lineup Changes Over The Years
- Band's 1979 Soundstage Comments
- Present Day Member's Profiles
- Musicians By Album
- Fret Magazine Interview

FAQ Part III
------------
Books
- Books On Lightfoot
- Books With Text By Lightfoot
- Songbooks
Unreleased Songs
1996 Tour Summary

Wayne periodically issued comprehensive listings of his FAQ Updates see for example:-
http://groups.google.com/group/alt.music.lightfoot/browse_frm/thread/cd2690b1617a569c/5ba6458d6a906841?q=faq&rnum=1#5ba6458d6a906841
Eventually he used this great effort and reconstituted it into the semi-official "official"
GL web site at:-
http://www.lightfoot.ca
I suspect that Valerie Magee when she slightly earlier (I think I am right in saying) created her late lamented cornucopia at:- http://www.gordonlightfoot.com
realised that the lyrics Wayne showed then (and now) are less than 100% accurate, because as Valerie now says on her "albums" page at:-
http://www.mageenet.net/albums.shtml
"Click on any album title for the full list of tracks, for clips of many songs, and for lyrics for all of them. Thanks to Cathy Cowette, Sean Gaynor, Ed Mullen and Lisa Westbrook for help with lyrics files."
(Not sure if that exercise increased Char's daughter's appreciation of the poet genius or not)
Char??
and therefore it must be assumed that Valerie got them all correct.
Am I right Val??
I recently realised that you can still access those individual song lyrics at:-
http://www.gordonlightfoot.com/songs.shtml
which are presumably the proof read/corrected versions and therefore a definitive set
Again am I correct Val??
If so, Jessie-Joe you now know a better source of accurate Lightfoot lyrics.
I do not know which source Florian used for the lyric section on this site.
May I be so bold as to suggest J-J that your mission now (not impossible), if you wish to accept in order to set things straight on this matter,is to compare Wayne's, Valerie's and Florian's lyrics pages for some sample errors that you found on Wayne's site and
1.report back here a summary of your research
and
2 email as full details as you can of the errors to the webmaster(s) of the two sites as applicable
(that task you should be able to find the time to do and it would be a very constructive service to the Lightfot fan community)

And talking aboot the Newsgroup, Walter and others interested in single and album chart positions you must read the recent thread subject:-
"GL Chart Positions"
at:-
http://groups.google.com/group/alt.music.lightfoot/browse_frm/thread/f288a1e38053a642/#

for example see an update from 1996:-
Parts 1 through VII at:-
http://groups.google.com/group/alt.music.lightfoot/browse_frm/thread/d0f60458031e5abe/173b5fd7cdf3c62c?q=faq&rnum=41#173b5fd7cdf3c62c
which begins:-

- Internet Tribute CD

FAQ Part II
-----------
The Lightfoot Band
- Lineup Changes Over The Years
- Band's 1979 Soundstage Comments

Charlene, this was suggested by Mike, If you want to go a little back on this post, he explains it. Im going to try. You know how Gordon in some songs uses the same line, but with a different one following it, such as; in Apology, for instance. He says;

"Gather not your gold on earth, (your kingdom is in heaven.)"

And then later in the song he repeats,

"Gather not your gold on earth, (it will not pass inspection.)"

Thats what he wants us to try. :D Do you get it? :D :) JJ. OH you also have to give the name of the song... :) ;) JJ.

Too Many Clues In This Room. I check that one last night but must have gone over the line. :(

But we are not playing it like it is supposed to be, Fading Away explains it a little higher on this post.

Gord says a line in a song, then you have to type the line that comes after.
Then further inthe song he says that same line again, but this time it is followed by a different verse. you have to type both verses, and type the name of the song.

ie:

Jessi- Jo says you had better not go
????????????????????????????????????
Jessi-Jo says you had better not go
????????????????????????????????????

From the song:?????????????

Thanks for tippin' me off on this one of Jesse's ? - I'll try - from a new perusal of the first page, and the latter 1/3rd of this resurrected - (as I guessed in the 'David is back - Hello !' - post) - I was welcoming him back, (I think its PlumbGurU2 - and ole regular from a ways backkkkkk) - and told him of the bevy of lyrics and game and theme threads that had made a resurgance from the older days - plugged you guys - this one Ron, jj's, and Linda's, et al, and shamelessly, of course, I plugged mine the most vigorously he hehehe lol

I've simply quote-boxed my attempt #1 to play this game , to seperate it from general thread comments below it..

OK if I GET IT THE NEXT LINE HERE IS:

CLUE LEAD-IN: 'Jessi-Jo said you had better not go'
RESPONSE WITH THE: 'A' jessi-Jo says you had better think twice

followed by same GOLD lead-in line again:

CLUE:Jessi-Jo said you had better not go-

looking for the next pairing of same lead in verse and (a/the) NEXT OCCURENCE"
response- to the place with the snow and the ice

....
I think I get it....looks like ithelp interest for abpout 3 x the 'average' thread.... seems alittle obtuse or confusing to me, bu t then again.... lyrics fanatics) gave veryone nitrogen bends until they got the simple dots thing down pat....lol....

and BTW - OK on the NUKE -as I see jj you guys were allready trying to HINT to me you got it with the keyword Doomsday....lol....so yes Ron - good call on nuking it.... I was going in this early AM to do just at. my pluggin in of 10 new songs I think I'll have in place in the next hour....if I don't...freeze...yur' ;)

jj you asked for how may songs were left in database to play in lyrics fan(atics) - believe it or not, due to my less diligently-considered duplication of my favourite songs that automatically came to mind, befoe I had geo-clue-cruncher built, I thought we were half way at Q150....not so...

and in keeping, now at just under Q200, were are at only song # 143 my my eval...we got plenty of room if it still appeals to you guys....and THATS not including the optional Rarities Q;s under unreleased and publisher's demos et al in Wayne's World... those are bad in any QTY thoug, as playing by ear w/o records or CD's to listen to most of them by definition on is a rough order...so my answer from database of 143 to go is base upon the std. "20" contractual "studio" (released) albums...

..realizing at least one was recorded in a barn....Summer Side if Life, I think - but goog God - with all the back-up vocals and over-dubs - of course there must have been a huge engineering task to finish after lead vocal and primary instument tracks were layed down ostensibly in the barn.....I thought it was ODR, cause of the slight Blue-Grass influence and diff instruments.... but no, I THEN EVEN HEARD THE WORD "JAZZ" ATTACHED MORE SO TO THAT - 0DR - than other albums eg DSR's Make way.. and it said (the article) that SummerSide of Life was in the barn.....??

Anyway - whats your guys prefercne - keep playin lyric fan(atics) (no changes like the clasroom thing lol....) with us at aprox 1/2 way, or move interest to another primary lyrics verse game, like and/or this (one of Jesse Joe's originally...),or ... others.. and ALSO -of course the the other simultaneous ones jj, Linda, this RM, etc....

All I'm really wondering is do you guys wanna keep playin my thread ? I'm OK either way..... plenty of songs....or is it playin out fun-wise ? its cool, either way.... and I'll play this one if you guys want to as well, in either case....

Waddya think jj/RM/Jesse et al ? and anyone else whp has time and/or interest invested in it or wishes to ? I C some familiar names this and previous pages..... for me. it depends on who is playing for me... - not snobbery at all, only a desire for posts to be pleasant and enjoyable, ones that are not trying to .....illicit a ..defensive...response from me....lol..as. it were.... I have better things to do.....the core lyrics gang works great for me, and some new/old PLEASANTa faces may jump back in.... hmm ?

Let's try a different tack. Lots of Gord's lyrics repeat a line in different stanzas, but a word, or phrase, is different on the repeat.

This one should be easy, but it illustrates the idea.

"Gather not your gold on Earth..."

What's the line, the first time and what is it the second time? What song?

I'm not sure I can remember all the times his lyrics do this. Might be fun.

maybe not as fun as mike anticipated, or at least not as popular

is this not an example what he is describing? (from WFY)

Here in my on-again, off-again style
Here in my on-again, off-again smile
Here in my off-again, on-again grin
Here in my off-again, on-again skin

I believe that IS his thought, jj. I am not sure - I'd like to see him finish th example - cause he may be on to something real fun. Do you guys think my interpretation of the JEsse ? rules was accurate - and my attempt to do one look .... like what hte game was... te Ron I see what you mean about trying to follow follow echo echo it it...

BTW - I got 10 new ones up (you know that) but all replied and big -X'd :)
- in lyrics quizzers and more - RON = Please see my comment on your music site there - 2nd comment more in depth. Very empirical approach I took ;)
