I know he is a bluegrass artist. But, he has covered quite a bit of Gord's material, and taken alot of slack from the "oldgrass" believers--even being booed for playing Gord in concert! Over the past dozen years, he has hardly had an album without a cover of one of Gord's songs-including an album entitled "Cold on the Shoulder", and "Tony Rice sings GL"

His interpretations of Gord's music are amazing, his style and flatpicking second to none--

How many of you have listened to him, and what are your favorite GL song(s) he has covered?

If you do not own him, start with his all GL album and then expand...

I have all of GL in album and CD--some on assorted tape format.

I own all of Tony's material.

Hard to stake out a favorite, but I will take a stab at his cover of "Shadows".

Im a big fan of Tony's Ive seen him a bunch in concert and he's amazing. He is probably one of the best guitarts today. He has jammed with Gord too and Gord was very impressed. I have never heard of him being boo'd. Are you sure about this? He is so well repected in the bluegrass community and people that go see him know his work, I find it hard to believe. I own most all of his CD,s including his brothers work too. Hes really good with Bluegrass Album Band. Lots of great music.

paddletothesea,

I was given Tony's album of GL covers by a bluegrass fan who knew I loved Lightfoot. It's great but is it true that he no longer sings in concert?

Rice has been a Lightfoot fan since high school. The Phil Ochs tune, "Changes," which Lightfoot recorded in the 60's, I believe was an early influence. Rice's impact on Bluegrass Music and acoustic music has been rather spectacular. He became one of the first stars of the new school of Bluegrass, and has reached icon status to many. Starting with JD Crowe and the New South in the early 70's, his respect for Lightfoot music was evident with their recording of Ten Degrees and You Are What I Am (Rounder 0044). Since then, he has included Lightfoot tunes on practically every project. I am not a big fan of Lightfoot covers, but Rice gets a free pass. His interpretation, arrangements, and guitar playing on all of these songs is phenomenal. Rice no longer sings because of some throat problems, but he is still regarded as one of the best acoustic guitar players in the world.

Tony is a guitar virtuoso and marvelous interpreter of songs. The music he pulls out of Gord's material never ceases to amaze me. His instrumental work is out of this world! But, I sure miss his singing.

Tony Rice introduced me to Gordon Lightfoot. Between the exposure from Tony to Gordon, and my first trip to Canada last summer, I am hooked on this artist and his music. People may knock others who cover Lightfoot's songs, but to me it brings a lot of joy as a fan, and respect to somone like Tony Rice when they choose Lightfoot's material over countless others. At least 3-5 days a week, I can't wait to get home and play one of Gordon's songs on my guitar that has been going through my head that day.

Hello, apart from the all GL album that Tony did, if I get other albums by Tony, will there be other GL tunes that were not included on this album? If it's not too much trouble, please tell me what else besides this album he has recorded of Gord's.
Thanks a lot.

Matthew,

From what I can discern the TR sings GL album is a compilation of the tunes that he did on his other albums. They decided to collect them all and target us, I love the album myself...nice music.
