Haven't been in here for a while. It's just amazing that this topic is still kicking after almost 5 years! Says a lot about Gord's fans... I just took a driving trip to Wash DC and, naturally, had some GL CD's with me. Thought of a subset of my all time favorites - driving tunes.... Start with Early Morning Rain, move on to the Trilogy, throw in some Alberta Bound, Don Q and Patriot's Dream. Get out Old Dan's Records, Did She Mention My Name and Daylight Katy and Sundown. Add a little Christian Island and Rainbow Trout and the miles just melt by......IP: Logged |

My favortie song by Mr. Lightfoot would definetly be narrowed down to "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald". Not only does it hold some of the best lyrics ever recorded but the simple melody leaves me breathless everytime I hear it. And as a lifetime fan I invite you to come over on the east coast and let the people of nova scotia and people at the "Stan Rogers Folk Festival" hear and enjoy your music as much as I do!Nova Scotia Boy A.K.A...Adam MacDonald, 18 IP: Logged |

I would just love to attend a Stanfest, especially if Gord played in it. When is it this year? Stan is my second favorite singer/songwriter.

Since the discussion requests only one song, I'll have to say "Ribbon Of Darkness". It was the first GL song I can remember hearing, recorded by both GL and Marty Robbins and it was the song that made me a GL fan at six years old.IP: Logged |

I am pretty sure I have posted to this topic before but have no idea when so as it has resurfaced again I'll add my 5 cents worth and my personal favo(u)rite Lightfoot song.Unfortunately it is not a Lightfoot song per se but the fantastic Lightfoot rendition of the beautiful Ewan MacColl song "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face".I can remember first hearing this on the Montreal FM radio station CJFM way back in 1966 and credit that recording with starting my long devotion to Gordon's music which was uiltimately responsible for saving my life some 34 years later when a fellow Lightfoot fan my dearest susan a.k.a. gordlover literaly saved my life in the chat room that I now so relentlessly advertise every Friday. I have just had a relook at page one of this topic and can thoroughly recommend the postings made on 14 april 2000 by "fezo" and a reply by Valerie Magee on the subject of the timing of the composition of "the wreck"

There are a lot of GL songs, and I previously had no favorite among them all. But when I bought the Gords Gold album, my favorite has always been Wherefore And Why. I like both recordings, but the 2nd one is the best. IP: Logged |

There are far too many songs to single out just one. GL is far and away the best lyricist in ANY genre of music, no other person even comes close. So many messages to read in this thread. Here are a few of my favourites. They aren't in any particular order, but I do like some better than others.Your Love's Return Peaceful Waters Cabaret Miguel CRT The Way I Feel (first version) Crossroads PW,CT And countless others...

That's OK, John. If you're like me your favorite has probably changed since you first posted. In my case, my original post siting Go My Way as my favorite is still accurate, I just have to add Tattoo and I'll Tag Along as additional favorites. At the time of my first posting on this topic, I was unfamiliar with these two additional favs. I have my Lighthead friends to thank for introducing me to these and many others. IP: Logged |

Apology - from the Sunday Concert LP. I saw GL for the first time in 1973 in southern Calif. I was hooked. I've been lucky enough to have seen him more than 40 times since. He changed my life and that song says it all. It has to be one of the most perfectly crafted songs of all time. It stills gives me goose bumps after all these years. It's too bad the entire world doesn't realize what a gift he is to us. Take some time and revisit his early stuff. NOBODY wrote songs as good as Lightfoot. I changed my career because of that first concert. I took my guitar playing seriously and turned professional 5 years later. IP: Logged |

My favorite GL songs change from time to time. Right now 'Tattoo' and 'Spanish Moss' followed closely by 'River of Light'. There is no doubt that he is a master songsmith. Not only can he compose wonderful songs but taking a good look at his cataloguen reflects that he is also a very productive composer. He has said that part of his productivity is the result of feeling responsible for the financial well-being of his band. P.S. Does anyone but me have a naughty idea of what 'Spanish Moss' really is? Yes well there are other fans on the Newsgroup who, have had to admit that they knew not how to access corfid (can you believe that ??!!).Anyroad it just so happens that I have made up a pair of short "user-friendly" URL links as follows:- 1.corfid http://www.corfid.shorturl.com That will take you directly to the topic list of the main Gordon lightfoot forum (this one) and you can easily transfer to either of the other two forums by simply utilising the "hop to" drop down selection box at the bottom of every listing or topic page 2.similarly with no fuss or effort you can get to the latest (revised) Google Groups thread listing for the newsgroup alt.music.lightfoot by using this similarly brilliant invention of mine:- http://www.newsgroup.shorturl.com Google used to have an annoying habit of telling you that your nice spanking new posting would not appear on their listing for some unfathomable reason for 3 to 9 hours and they meant it but fortunately they have recently replaced the original with a beta version that now says your posting will appear momentarily and it seems to take only a few seconds.Still not as quick as the virtually immediate updating if you can tame the newsreader/your ISP link in Internet Explorer's Outlook Express. Don't ask me if you can do the same with Netscrape or the new demon Firefox, I haven't faced that challenge yet anyone else have any ideas/ or experience in that regard ?? Note that both the above shortutrls should be a cinch to incorporate into your head's memory or after opening add to your favo(u)rites/bookmarks:- I have two further short urls to offer:- 3 the main ebay.com GL listing http://www.ebaylightfoot.shorturl.com which takes you directly to the current ebay listing of GL auctions sorted by most recent additions first or for UK punters:- 4.ebay uk listing (although usually the UK.... and Canadian items appear in the main ebay.com listing http://www.ebayuklightfoot.shorturl.com Note that when I devised all the above at:- http://www.shorturl.com the service was completely free but new shorturls are being charged for so I said "sod that for a bunch of bananas" and then discovered a still free alternative at:- http://www.notlong.com Just trying to be of asssistance here John Fowles [This message has been edited by johnfowles (edited December 28, 2004).] IP: Logged |

OH MY GOSH!!! Only one favorite? I guess at first I'd say "If you could read my mind" because it was the first one I heard and absolutely fell in love with GL right there and then. But actually ALL of his music is perfect. His voice is sooooo good, kinda sad and meloncholy(sp?) yet happy and very, very sexy. His songs can make me cry my eyes out and then right away make me happy. "Old Dan's records" always makes me happy as does "Carefree highway" I had a friend who named his dog Sundown because of GL's song. I guess I just LOVE them all!!!!IP: Logged |

I would have to say "Carefree Highway". This song reminds of family members, the few friends that i knew in church that have all departed this life into everlasting life. They are not suffering anymore. As for me, it means overcoming many heartaches that I have went through in my own life and now I am free from that hurt to move on to something better. For me this song has a spiritual meaning. [This message has been edited by stephanniel (edited January 11, 2005).] IP: Logged |

Trying to answer which Lightfoot tune is your favorite is virtually impossible, yet elementary. It's like trying to say which beer is your favorite, the answer is "the one in front of you of course".And so it is with Lightfoot, I found myself listening to "Song for a Winters Night" just today and thought it to be my "favorite" and then I heard "Ordinary Man" a bit later and, you get the picture. The guy is just too great. Joe ps I went to Cathy Cowette's site and heard her rendition of SFAWN, awesome. Funny, I was just thinking about this yesterday, and yes it's an impossible topic, he's written so many truly great songs. But when I think about a GL song I always delight in hearing and playing and singing in all times and places and moods it's "The House You Live In" off Summertime Dream. "Don Quixote" is a close second, "Magnificent Outpouring" third.IP: Logged |

Christian Island. May sound lame, but I remember that song from so long ago and it always evoked these wonderful feelings of just being on that b oat and being free...much better than the real thing. We have a boat and I never go out on it. It was the joy of the singer and the great heart that went into this song that just got to me. All of my Lightfoot vinyls were ruined in Puerto Rico due to mold (everything there rots, believe me!) and I had a Gord's Gold CD and recently bought a double CD of best of's, but no Christian Island. So one of my kids went on a search and finally turned up Don Quixote. Well, of course! How could I have forgotten? So now I've got this wonderful salty seaful song, and it is every bit as good as I remembered it to be.IP: Logged |

Why thank you , Joe! SFAWN is definitely my favorite Lightfoot song, although there are several that sit in second place. I've played that song for quite a few years, but it was just a few years ago that I figured out an intro that worked, not exactly what Terry plays, but enough to make the song familiar to any Lightfoot fan when I start playing it. Sure you're a Mainer. You're in the other Maine, the one that sits below Aroostook County. Both Maines have their good points and their bad points. I enjoy the tranquility and laid back life of Northern Maine, but I hate the five and a half hour drive it takes to get out of the state. I have a son who lives in Gorham, so I visit your area often. My favorite place in Portland is Buckdancers Music, the best guitar shop in Maine, in my opinion. Cathy http://www.cathycowette.com IP: Logged |

The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald is one of my all time favourites. When I was in my early ywenties in the seventies I used to sit and record the song from the radio and write down all the words so that I could sing the song all the way through. The song title was inspired by a bit of conversation he overheard, somebody saying they just loved those old DANCE records, which Gord changed into old DAN's records. Such is creative license, and talent. IP: Logged |

Have been reading the posts with great interest. I seems almost impossible to pick a favourite. They are all so beautiful...all capture the deepest feelings and experiences of human existance. The feelings they convey are so universal, transcending all cultures, and all generations. Singer, composer, guru, minstrel, hero, and yet one of us. Husband, father, friend, and genuinally beautiful person. Are we not profoundly lucky to be his fans? Thank you Gord! Everytime I go to the supermarket, it seems that they are playing Gord's music. , and I have to make sure I stand in the right place under the speakers to hear it all. Today it was "Carefree Highway". It makes me want to hurry home and put on his music. Today, because we have snow.....keep thinking of "Song for A Winter's Night", and "Whispers of the North". Just can't seem to pick a favourite, as I totally love them all. They seem to weave a story of our lives. They are so much a part of life in our family. Thank you Gord...you are one of a kind. We love you and your music more than you can ever know.
