Song:
Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald

The real lyrics were:
It was the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald

But I misheard them as:
It was the wreck of the elephant's finger

I think my version is better than the original:
yes

Comments:
The embarrassing moment of revelation:
I was about 6 or 7 and singing in the car with my dad. He had tapes of every kind of music imaginable. After a good laugh, he explained story of the Edmund Fitzgerald.
Age when I realized how wrong I had been: 7

Song:
Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald

The real lyrics were:
The legend goes on from the Chippewah on down
Of the big lake they call Gitchee Goomee

But I misheard them as:
The legend goes on 'cause some chicks passed it down,
to the people they call bitchs and gloomies.

I think my version is better than the original:
yes

The embarrassing moment of revelation:
We were practicing our listening skills in fifth grade social studies class and everyone had to memorize a verse of Edmund Fitzgerald. I had not studied at all and when the day came to sing in front of class, I sang the words mentioned above and the kids started laughing, but the teacher thought I was joking and got totally steamed and sent me to the principals office where I got a Saturday D.T.
Age when I realized how wrong I had been: 10
